The Road Less Traveled by M. Scott Peck, M.D.
- "Discipline is a system of 4 techniques of dealing constructively with the pain of problem solving."
- "Delaying gratification, assumption of responsibility, dedication to the truth/reality,& balancing."
- Vast experience & successful maturation allow us to see the world and our place in it realistically
- Spiritually evolved (discipline, mastery, love) are competent & thus called on to serve the world
- Energy for discipline is love: the will to extend oneself to nurture spiritual growth (self/others)
- Spiritual growth can be achieved only through the persistent exercise of real love: cathexis.
- Cathexis is the "process of attraction, investment, and commitment" to something outside ourselves.
- Path of spiritual growth leads out of superstition into agnosticism & then accurate knowledge of God
- We must prepare ourselves to be lovable/loved by becoming loving & disciplined.
- Must work out w/ effort & anxiety own path toward the identification of individual selves with God.
